Instead I went to see Zombieland. A worthwhile use of time if ever I could imagine one, and was also in keeping with my pre-new-years resolution of making a decent effort to immerse myself in more cultural things such as Hemingway, the opera and the mindless killing of the undead.
In short - it's a hoot. While not always laugh out loud, tears streaming down my face funny, it's a bloody good way to spend 90 minutes and enjoy every one of them.
The film stars Woody Harrelson as the angry at the world, overly violent, but hurting on the inside partner to Jesse Eisenberg's geeky, socially inept and helpless everyman, on the road to find his parents after the world has been taken over by a virus which turns people into zombies. On the road they meet a pair of sisters (including Abigail Breslin - yes I thought so too - a very strange film for her to turn up in!). Would love blossom? Would they be attacked by a seemingly never ending army of zombies? Would an amazing cameo appearance by a beloved comic make this film? Yes. Yes and Yes.
There isn't much of a plot, but there's plenty of splatter and plenty of laughs. I'd like to think of this as the companion piece to Adventureland, not only for the Eisenberg factor, but also the use of soundtrack, the type of humour and (think about it!) they both have "land" at the end of their names!!
Looking for a brief interlude in your day/life? See Zombieland. It doesn't take itself too seriously and reminds you that sometimes, neither should we.
Now back to my very important letter.

I agree, wholeheartedly. I'm thinking about putting Zombieland on my list of favourite films of the year.
